Welcome to a cup of skills, my friend! Hope you're having a great time out there! Today I'm gonna talk about 5 tips to shoot better videos! And here we go!
1. Improve your composition skills! There is a lot of information about this topic, but I want to mention some really basic must have rules in your pocket! The first one is the rule of thirds. Basically, you need to divide your image into 9 equal parts, just like that. So this rule says that the main object should be in the region of intersection of these lines. Let's look at some movie examples. I think you should try it yourself right after watching the video, because practice makes perfect! But you shouldn't do the rule of thirds always, try something else, experiment with framing and sometimes you can simply break the rules, cause it's your piece of art and you are the director of photography! Just keep these rules in mind and use them or not when you need. It is also cool to use symmetry in your frame. And here are some excellent examples of that. And also try to check the background every single time you shoot videos. Because sometimes there is some sort of trash going on there. And it's not really good!
2. Try different camera angles, pay attention to small details, and always try to shoot closeups, wide shots and middle shots to manipulate them in post production. And as a result - get a really rich video. It is also useful to make a shot list so you will know what are the must-have shots for that scene.
3. Stabilize your footage as good as you can. But also remember to shoot differently - you can use a tripod, a steady-cam or just shoot handheld. It is always good to have a couple of camera shaking moves but not just a static shot.
4. Add some dynamic camera moving in your scene. It can be moving forward or backward shot, revealing, parallax, dolly zoom etc. These types of shooting make your video look more professional and expensive too!
5. The lighting and audio are extremely important! And that is everything! Because at the beginning we don't usually pay attention to that staff. We buy an expensive camera gear but forget about microphone or some sort of lighting. I would love to recommend you to get for example, the rode mic go and YN 300 lighting panel for start. It is a really good and budget gear you definitely need for shooting a bunch of video styles. Also, try to experiment with natural lighting, shoot in golden hour, when the sun is soft and orange. Learn about basic and classic 3 point lighting setup and you are ready to go! Remember that lighting and good sound are way better than 4K video quality, for example.
And the bonus tip is - The story matters most! Don't forget about the story you want to show people. Because it is the main key of the successful project! And now all you need to do is grab your gear and start making content you want! Don't be afraid of making mistakes, it's totally fine!
