There's a lot of bad PowerPoint slides out there, like this one. If you find yourself needing to fix one of these slides, ask yourself these five simple questions.

First is what are you trying to say? The whole point of a slide is to communicate a message. So make sure that message is spelled out clearly in the title and then supported with subtitles.

Next, what can I simplify? You want to make sure everything on your slide contributes to your overall message and if it doesn't, delete it, question number three is how can I show this better? You want to constantly be asking yourself, Is there a better way to show this and a good way to do that usually is with charts, and before is what grabs my attention. Your audience only has so much attention.

So you want to guide them to the interface with things like bold the text, color boxes, lines and other types of cards.

Final question is what looks intentional. And this is all about formatting. You want to minimize randomness on your slide. Make sure everything is aligned, looks very professional and above all else. Remove those default PowerPoint colors, replace them with something.

Start asking yourself these five questions as you review and create slides and they'll start to look a whole lot better.
