I hated team-building exercises, until I watched this TED talk
When I was in the corporate world I had to do these team-building exercises. For one of them we were split into small groups and given a marshmallow, dry spaghetti, string, and some tape. And the goal was to see who could build the tallest tower in 18 minutes.
To be honest, I hated it. It felt like a complete waste of time.
It wasn't until years later while watching this Ted talk that I learned something really interesting.
It turns out, they've replicated this exercise with all types of people. And one group that consistently does well is kindergartners.
And I don't mean they did well for their age. I mean on average they do better than business school students, lawyers, and CEOs.
The reason why is because most people spend the first few minutes trying to develop a plan. They think about how they're gonna stack the spaghetti together and use the tape and where they're going to put the marshmallow, all so they can build the best tower possible. Only for it to collapse right at the end.
But the kindergartners just jump right in and start building. When their first idea doesn't work, they learn what went wrong and they rebuild. And they do this again and again for 18 minutes, until they've got a pretty good tower.
So the next time you need to build a PowerPoint slide, or write an important email, or whatever, don't worry about making it perfect from the beginning. Just get started with something! Because you'll be much better off iterating and improving along the way.
