I redesigned this McKinsey slide to be more effective
What’s wrong with this slide from McKinsey? And how could we fix it?
For one, the slide is just too busy. So let’s clean it up by first getting rid of this unnecessary picture.
Next we want to let the title breath a little bit more, and what I mean by that is there’s just too much going on up here, so it’s hard for the audience to quickly notice the slide’s main message, which is written in the title.
So we can move this down, and delete this top line to create some more space.
Speaking of lines, we can also clean up this chart a little more. The message is actually just about this 4% growth rate, so let’s delete the rest of these callouts because they’re just distractions.
Now we can get rid of the legend. Whenever possible you want to put labels right next to the lines themselves, because it saves space and makes it easier on the audience. But then we can take it a step further and color match them as well.
Next let’s add a line here to distinguish between historical and future data, because that’s important to the message. We don’t want to make this too obvious because otherwise it will be a distraction, but it’s still helpful because it brings context to the chart.
Then finally we can just make a few formatting tweaks - add year markers and percent signs, remove these unnecessary grid marks, and stretch out this title to make it easier to read.
The end result, a nice looking slide with a clear and focused takeaway.
