Big name consulting firms like McKinsey, Bain, and BCG all do one thing really well - they create amazing presentations for their clients. But it's not just the design of these presentations that makes them so great. It's the stories they tell.
One way they do this is with the SCQA framework, which stands for situation, complication, question, and answer. Basically it’s a way to structure your introduction, to put the rest of the presentation in context.
For example, on this introduction slide from Oliver Wyman they first explain the situation by talking about the growth in the technology venture investing market. But then they introduce a complication, by saying that the market has recently experienced a decline in deal volume. Which leads to the question they’re really trying to answer, which “is What is the impact of large technology firms on the venture investing market?"
Then the rest of the presentation provides the answer to that question.
Obviously this is a very text heavy slide, which is why introductions like this are best for report-style presentations, and not the types of presentations you would deliver live.
But laying it out this way makes it easy for the audience to understand what the presentation is all about, and why they should care.
It takes a dense presentation full of text and data, and it turns into a clear and compelling story, with a setting, a conflict, and a resolution.
