What makes this slide from Google so easy to read? Sure, the font looks nice, the colors are simple, and the message is clear, but there's something else you might not have noticed—and that's the subtle use of space. If you've studied graphic design, you know how critical space can be. Usually, when we think of space, we picture ultra-minimal designs, but space is equally useful on normal corporate-style presentations like this one. That's because space not only makes your slide less cluttered, but it helps the audience focus on your most important ideas, even if you have a lot of text and data, as most business presentations tend to.
So, if you're looking to build better slides, here are a few practical tips: add a margin around the edges of your slide to give a cleaner look; give your main message room to breathe so it can help your audience focus on it; if you have a lot of text, make it more readable with generous line spacing; and, where possible, try to use short, punchy phrases instead of long, hard-to-read sentences.
