When you're giving a presentation, how do you get a room full of people to care about what you're saying? Step number one: set the stage. Here's Steve Jobs in 2008 introducing the iPhone, and he starts by first talking about Apple—how they've continued to revolutionize products, starting with the Mac, then the iPod, and now the iPhone. So, he sets a background; this is how he sets the stage.
Step number two: introduce a problem. The next thing he does is talk about how smartphones today are not that smart. Sure, they can access the internet, but they've got these big, clunky keyboards, and their functionality is pretty limited.
Step number three: pose a question. He says, "What if you could take the revolutionary innovation that Apple's known for and apply it to the smartphone industry?"
Step number four: provide a solution. The obvious solution for this presentation was the iPhone, but by this point, the audience was locked in, and they understood why the iPhone was needed. It's a simple way to start a presentation, but when you do this, you can keep the audience engaged. You help them understand why what you're saying is important, and it's how you make a good, persuasive presentation.
We actually made a whole video on persuasive presentations, so if you're interested, make sure you check it out.
