I gave this McKinsey slide a makeover

This PowerPoint slide from McKinsey looks pretty good, but I think I can make it better.

I’ll start by changing this half light half dark background, which doesn’t really add anything to the slide.

Next I want to simplify this chart on the left. The slide is about AI adoption, but showing growth by region doesn’t really add to that message, it just clutters the slide. So I’m going to focus on just this part right here to make the message more clear.

I’m also gonna flip it vertically with 2020 on the left and 2021 on the right, to emphasize the change from one year to the next. Then I’ll make it bigger, and add this nice callout.

Now I have all this extra room to work with, so I can space out this text so it’s easier to read.

Then I can split this subtitle into two parts, and add a better title on the top so the slide is logical and structured with a main message, key arguments, and supporting details.

At this point I could probably stop, but if you look closely this top section is just a repeat of what’s in the chart, so I’ll take that out, re-space the slide once again, and now it’s ready to go.

Compare this with the original version and this slide looks a lot better. But more important than that, it’s clear, focused, and easy to read.
