What’s the best way to read a dense PowerPoint slide, like what you might see in consulting or finance?
Step #1 is to read the title
It sounds obvious, but it’s really easy to forget this step and just focus on what catches your eye
The goal here is to understand the slide’s key takeaway, so you can get the highest level idea first, then start reading through the details
If you focus on the details first, you’re likely to get distracted or confused
Step #2 is to put the slide in context
Ask yourself, how does this slide fit into the overall presentation, or project?
Because thinking about the context of the slide, is really going to help you focus on what’s most important, and ignore what doesn’t matter
A good way to think about this is if someone walked into the room right now, what would you say to get them caught up
Step #3 is to look for support
In other words, you want to think about how the data of the slide, support the key takeaway
When you think about the slide in this way, you’ll be able to spot the important insights instead of getting lost in the details
A good question to ask yourself might be: if I were to highlight something on this slide, what would it be?
Then the final step, is to be critical
You already understand what the slide’s takeaway is, what support they have for that takeaway, and where it fits in the presentation
Now you want to think about what doesn’t work about the slide
Where is the support weak, or what details just aren’t relevant
If you do the other steps first, you’ll find that this step is a lot easier
And with practice, you’ll get really good at it.
