Learn how to estimate square roots without a calculator by comparing them to other, known, square roots.

You'll see how to estimate the values of the square roots of 50, 96, and 11.

We'll start by making a list of the square roots we know, up to the square root of 100. We'll also place these numbers on a number line.

To estimate the square root of 50, we'll look at our known square roots. We'll see in particular that it's a little bit bigger than root 49, which is 7. You'll see how to make the square root of 50 on the number line, and we'll use our visual estimate to estimate it to one decimal place.
