How much money does a hockey player earn in a year? What's the weather like in New York City in July? How long does it take you to run 5K? Questions like these are hard to answer because there are lots of different hockey players who earn vastly different amounts, the weather is very different day-to-day, and everyone has fast days and slow days running! But math is coming to the rescue with measures of central tendency!
"Measures of central tendency" is a fancy term that means something like "middle number", "regular number", or "average". It turns out that there are several helpful ways of measuring middles! None of them is perfect, but each of them can be useful. The three most common ways of measuring the "middle" are the mean, the median and the mode.
This video is the first in a playlist on the mean, the median and the mode. Learn what they are, how to calculate them, when each is useful, and the limitations of each. See more here: • Mean, median and mode
