Following up on a question in the comments in my last video, let's take a look at Why You should UTILIZE SHAPE LAYERS and MERGE PATHS in After Effects in this Tutorial Tuesday.

When working with Shape Layers in After Effects there is a multitude of ways to use, utilize and take advantage of the various settings and tools they hold in store us. So today we are talking about why you should work with multiple shapes in a single Shape Layer, what you can achieve by doing so, and when as well as when not to do it - because as you might have guessed there are certain drawbacks to this procedure.

It does make it worthwhile to know what you need to do with your elements and shapes before starting out with it all. So always try to plan as far ahead as possible so you don’t have to make a whole lot of changes and restructuring halfway in.
I hope this could clear up some confusion around how to use multiple shapes within the same layer and make the most of the different merge types.
