RAID or a redundant array of independent/inexpensive disks organizes physical drives in a way to either increase fault tolerance (hard drives randomly dying on you), increase reading and writing speeds, or some combination of fault tolerance and speed.

This RAID or mirror configuration is done through software provided for free by Microsoft in Windows 10. This is not the most safe or fastest solution for hard drive redundancy BUT it is free and included in Windows 10. This RAID solution is software and will consume a small amount of CPU power.

In this video we will be looking at setting up a Mirrored volume or a RAID 1 Array. The purpose of this RAID level is to provide disk redundancy meaning, any data saved to the array is copied identically to two hard drives in case one of the hard drives fails or stops working correctly. This system depends on having two decent working hard drives as they will be loaded equally. This system also relies on the operating system to correctly write the data to the drives and assumes complete and total stability in the system. This is not always the case in everyone's PC at all times so, if you have mission critical data, or data you can't live without, you will need a better solution.

Please note that RAID is NOT a back up of your data. If your data has any value to you, you should back up your data to another storage solution, ideally offsite at some interval (automated).
