TP-Link Tapo P125: https://amzn.to/405Q1f6
Today we’re taking a look at the TP-Link Tapo branded P125 Smart WiFi Plug. TP-Link reached out and asked if I wanted to take a look at this kit and I was definitely interested. As far as my IoT smart enabled home goes, it’s not very smart. Most of my devices aren’t on smart plugs and I don’t have any smart switches either. The P125 smart plug kit is a nice budget offering that features compact wi-fi enabled plugs supporting the Tapo app, which is what I use, as well as Apple Homekit, Alexa, and Google Home. You can set up schedules that actually improve your space for things like fans for airflow and cooling, you can schedule phone chargers, and you can actually use this to power on lights in your house at night time in order to make it look like someone is home and awake even when you’re not around. This is all pretty neat stuff.

In my setup, I’m going to be using these smart wifi plugs in order to power on all of my studio lights at once using a Tapo custom shortcut. Right now I have to walk into my studio area basically in the dark in order to flip on each of these lights. It’s very annoying but necessary because I use a certain type of light bulb for my lighting. After aggregating all of these lights into a few connections, don’t worry, they’re all 9 watt LED bulbs, I was able to turn on all of my studio lighting from my phone with 1 button before wandering in the dark! This is a pretty big deal to me because I tend to leave my mobile light stands and tripod kind of wherever when I wrap up filming something. For now I’m not running a schedule so I flip the Studio Lights button on in the app. I could however use Google Home with my android phones and turn these on with voice commands which is very cool. As for the specs on these plugs, they actually support 1800 watts of power on a 15amp 110v circuit so if you can power it, the plug will make it happen. These smart plugs are UL94-V0 flame retardant rated and probably best of all, they only physically take up 1 outlet worth of space. The setup was easy with the app, no hub is required but you do need to initially pair the plugs with bluetooth in order to get them on your WiFi network. It’s quite nice that if you are on your network and your Internet is out for example, you can still control and make changes to the scheduling of the smart plugs and the smart plugs continue operating as normal, as long as you still have power. The only improvement I would like to see in future revisions is for the plug to be able to tell you in the app how much power is being consumed by whatever is plugged into the smart plug. I feel like that would be a good clue if you’re checking something you’ve assigned that it’s still working and for you to help understand your energy consumption. If you need some easy to use and quick to deploy budget smart plugs, I would definitely take a look at Tapo’s P125 kit.
