Fire is a natural part of the Arctic climate system. Recent studies have suggested that Arctic fires may become more prevalent under future warming conditions. Arctic wildfires can have large-scale impacts due to the potential to release carbon from peatlands, and due to the downwind effects of organic carbon aerosols on radiative energy fluxes and air quality. In this joint meeting of the Modelers and Terrestrial Ecosystems communities of practices, we heard presentations on the seasonal prediction of fire weather for the Alaska region from Professor Uma Bhatt’s research group at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. We discussed the conditions that describe fire weather in Alaska and the predictability of those conditions.
