This is the recording of the November 2023 meeting of the Physical Oceanography Community of Practice. In this session reviewed the history and successes of previous international collaborations on marine Arctic science, in particular through the Arctic Ocean Model Intercomparison Project (AOMIP) and Forum for Model and Observational Synthesis (FAMOS) activities. We introduced the Consortium for the Advancement of Marine Arctic Science (CAMAS), and opened the floor for a discussion on potential collaborative activities that would advance the understanding and model representation of key processes in the Arctic marine environment.
Earth system models are critical tools for understanding the drivers of the rapid changes that are taking place in the Arctic Earth system. However, their fidelity needs to be continuously tested and improved through careful validation with observations. The Arctic Ocean Model Intercomparison Project (AOMIP) and two cycles of the Forum for Model and Observational Synthesis (FAMOS) have demonstrated that strong collaboration between modelers and observationalists can advance our understanding of the drivers of Arctic change, and improve their representation in Earth system models.
The Consortium for the Advancement of Marine Arctic Science (CAMAS) will build on the strong legacy of international collaborative research on marine Arctic science. An interagency project funded by DOE and ONR, CAMAS aims to advance the understanding and model representation of key marine Arctic processes that contribute to the rapid changes in the Arctic. It proposes to do so by facilitating and coordinating model/observational synthesis and model intercomparison studies, and the development of metrics that characterize key processes in the Arctic marine system.
Michael Steele (UW/APL) presented a brief history of AOMIP and FAMOS. Jackie Clement Kinney (NPS) presented "CAMAS: A new model/observational synthesis activity." Jiaxu Zhang (US) presented a discussion of community needs and potential collaborative research activities for CAMAS.
