One of the goals of the Monitoring, Observing, Modeling, and Prediction (MOMP) Foundational Activity is to support development of metrics that measure key Arctic processes and implementation of these metrics in benchmarking packages to facilitate model validation against observations. In this meeting, we had two presentations focused on the use of observations to evaluate models.
Nathan Collier (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) presented "Model Evaluation with ILAMB and Prospects for Arctic Metrics and Data." The International Land Model Benchmarking (ILAMB) project (https://www.ilamb.org/) is a model-data intercomparison and integration project designed to improve the performance of land models and, in parallel, improve the design of new measurement campaigns to reduce uncertainties associated with key land surface processes.
Eugene Petrescu (NOAA/NWS) presented "Arctic Testbed and Proving Ground: Current Activities." The National Weather Service (NWS) Arctic Testbed (https://www.weather.gov/arh/atpg) facilitates the testing and evaluation of new research, guidance, forecast techniques, products, and services to improve forecast process and decision support activities in Alaska and the adjacent Arctic.
