The Guitar Solo Session series features interpretations of some of my favorite guitar solos. In many cases, I try to stay true to the original solo, while also incorporating some different licks, nuances and inflections. My overall goal is to be in the musical ballpark.

About the song and the solo:

""Headed For A Heartbreak" was the third single issued from Winger's eponymous 1988 debut album. Written by frontman Kip Winger, the song hit No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in summer 1989.

"Headed For A Heartbreak' for me exemplifies the band the most because of the way Rod [Morgenstein] drums and Reb's [Beach] solo," Kip Winger told Songfacts.com. "It's in Lydian and it's more out in the zone of where we all come from."

On the original studio recording, the guitar solo was played by Reb Beach. According to an interview in "Guitar For The Practicing Musician," Beach recording his guitar tracks on the debut Winger album using a Pensa Suhr and Kramer Pacer and Kitty Hawk amplification.

"'Headed For A Heartbreak' was first take," said Beach. "I played it and everyone freaked out. I had my eyes closed. I really felt it."

For the rhythm and lead guitar tracks, I played my White Ibanez RGIR20E (with EMG pickups) through custom patches on my Eleven Rack. The backing track was downloaded via iTunes.
