Exum Instruments EVP of Business Development, Ellen Williams, describes a case study highlighting the Massbox's proficiency in scanning battery electrodes and effectively diagnosing the origin of contaminants. Advanced battery developers and cell manufacturers typically rely on a laboratory's worth of spectroscopy and microscopy tools to characterize common defects like particle contamination and inhomogeneities in electrode composition. Exum's Massbox is the first instrument using Laser Ablation Laser Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (LALI-TOF-MS), allowing users to analyze millimeter-scale areas of battery electrodes and pinpoint contaminant particles down to the micron scale. A key benefit of the Massbox is its ability to detect all elements present without requiring the user to specify which elements to seek.
