The Guitar Solo Session series features interpretations of some of my favorite guitar solos. In many cases, I try to stay true to the original solo, while also incorporating some different licks, nuances and inflections. My overall goal is to be in the musical ballpark.
About the song and the solo:
"Alone" was the lead single from Heart's 1987 album Bad Animals, which was produced by Ron Nevison. Released in May 1987, the song spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the band's second chart-topping hit, and final to date. "Alone" was co-written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg.
On the original studio recording, the guitar solo was played by Howard Leese. "I remember being in my hotel room the night before I had to [record] the solo, thinking, 'This song is going to be number one, so the solo better be pretty good,'" said Leese about the "Alone" solo. For the rhythm and lead guitar tracks, I played my 1989 Heather Pearl Ibanez RG760 through a custom patch on my Eleven Rack. The backing track, which features the original song minus the guitar parts, was downloaded via GuitarBackingTrack.com.
