Two decades on after last hosting the event in 2001, the World Aquatics Championships, formerly known as the FINA World Championships prior to the FINA's rebranding to World Aquatics on December 2022, have returned to Fukuoka for the meet's 20th edition held from 14 to 30 July 2023.
The Japanese city was initially scheduled to stage the World Championships in 2021 - were supposed to be the 19th edition, but the shift of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to July of the same year due to the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the Fukuoka meet to be pushed back to 2022, and again to 2023 because of ongoing travel restrictions and safety measures that were imposed in Japan.
The championships included 2,392 athletes from 192 member federations, and while originally listed as 195 nations competing, due to the status of their member federation with World Aquatics, athletes from both the Philippines and Kenya were required to compete under the banner 'Suspended Member Federation', while two Syrian athletes competed under the banner 'World Aquatics Refugee Team'.
Russia and Belarus remain excluded from the event as the ban imposed on both countries by World Aquatics in response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine were still in place at the time of these championships.
