Just four decades after the capital last staged the Games (known as the British Empire Games at the time) in 1950 and about 16 years after New Zealand last staged them in 1974 at Christchurch, the Commonwealth Games came back to Auckland for the event's 14th iteration held from 24 January to 3 February 1990.

These games in Auckland coincide with New Zealand's sesquicentennial celebrations that year, marking 150 years since the 1840 signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, an agreement towards British sovereignty by representatives of the Crown and indigenous Māori chiefs, which is itself regarded by many as the founding document of the nation.

Perhaps, in contrast to the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh that was ill-famed due to financial mismanagement and a mass boycott, the 1990 Games was considered to be a great renewal in the competitiveness of the Commonwealth Games itself as this edition sees 2,074 athletes from 55 nations and territories participating. The Auckland Games had once more brought forth the "Friendly Games" atmosphere - which is what the mood was intended to be.

The event had sought not only record-breaking numbers in attendance, but a respectable 29 countries taking home medals from the possible 639. Australia were the topnotchers in the Games' medal tally, racking out 162 medals; 52 were gold. While England (2nd) and Canada (3rd) rounded up the top three, hosts New Zealand - finishing at fourth - enjoyed their best medal haul yet in Commonwealth Games history, grabbing 17 gold, 14 silver and 27 bronze medals.
