Berlin, Germany set the stage for the IAAF World Championships held from 15 to 23 August 2009, and the event itself was considered to be an economic success for the German capital; a total of 417,156 tickets were sold over the nine-day period, and estimates placed the total visitor spend in Berlin at around €120 million.

Serving as the centrepoint for the meet is the iconic Olympiastadion - the main stadium built for the 1936 Olympics, which underwent a €242 million renovation ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. At the same time, the marathon races, as well as the racewalking events, had their start and finish at the Brandenburg Gate.

There were records broken in the same site where Jesse Owens, in 1936, crafted his own name by winning four golds in a huge blow to Adolf Hitler’s intention to use the Berlin Olympics as an opportunity to demonstrate Aryan superiority. This time at these 2009 Championships, Usain Bolt emerged himself as the star of the meet, having been well-proven to be the fastest man on the planet after shattering three world records - with the notable highlight being the men's 100m dash, in which the Jamaican ran at 9.58 seconds, a benchmark that's still standing to this day.
