For the first time in its history, the remote southwestern Pacific country of the Solomon Islands played host to the Pacific Games, formerly known as the South Pacific Games and is Oceania's continental multi-sport competition that's held every four years. The 17th edition of the Games took place in its capital Honiara, and was initially due to be staged from 16 to 29 July 2023, but delays in Games' preparation caused by the pandemic prompted the event's organizers to push the games back and rescheduling them for 19 November and 2 December, still in the same year.

Honiara was awarded the Games in 2016 during the PGC General Assembly in Port Vila, Vanuatu, winning the hosting rights by a 12-10 vote over a bid from Pape'ete, the capital of Tahiti; the Tahitian bid was considered to be a solid favorite to land the event, and this decision was seen as a shock result.

The Solomon Islands, located northeast of Australia, is an archipelago of more than 900 islands with a total population of about 734,000 people, and despite being rich in natural resources, particularly forests and timber, most Solomon Islanders live in rural areas where access to infrastructure, basic services and economic opportunities is poor.

Around 5,000 athletes from 24 Pacific countries and territories took part at the Honiara Games - branded as Sol2023, competing in 342 events across 24 sports. New Caledonia emerged as the topnotchers of the event, finishing first in both total golds, with 82, and in the overall tally, with 197. They are followed by Tahiti at second (with 57 golds and 160 medals of any color) and Australia at third place with 84 overall, 50 were gold medals. While playing at their turf, Solomon Islands enjoyed their best performance yet at any Pacific Games, collecting 12 golds and 78 medals overall to finish at seventh.
