This video looks at how the community pharmacy is set to change, and be different to the degree as we have known it.

The MPharm pharmacy university degree is changing, and is different to the degree as we have known it. Now, the pre-registration training year has been replaced with a foundation training year, and the year aims to incorporate over the next 5 years the transition to allow pharmacists to qualify as independent prescribers. Time will tell what this means for the current and future cohort of pharmacists, and the next 5 years or so shows a very interesting time for pharmacy in the UK. Hopefully, the pharmacy videos on this channel help to aid pharmacy students, those interested in pharmacy, pharmacy trainees as well as practicing community pharmacists and managers to get a better idea of pharmacy in the UK. But its not just the pharmacy degree changing...

As well as this, there are various changes in the NHS and services within community pharmacy. As the first major NHS contract change in over a decade, this means that pharmacies will be approached in a completely different way. Exciting, but no doubt with plenty of challenges and obstacles.

The idea of having independent prescribers within community pharmacy in the UK means that they can act as the first line, treating a range of conditions that would otherwise have to be treated by a medical professional. These changes to the pharmacy profession mean that the public should, if all goes well, be able to be seen faster, with the pharmacists able to prescribe, and refer on to relevant healthcare professionals where necessary.
