Why did Stalin forbid Budyonny to shave off his moustache?
Whatever they say about Semyon Budyonny, his image has always been associated by Soviet people with courage, bravery and devotion to the working peasant state. Neither during the Civil War, nor during the Great Patriotic War, he did not sit in stuffy Kremlin offices, but was always in the thick of things. Semyon Mikhailovich was loved not only in the higher echelons of power, but especially among ordinary soldiers for his caring attitude to the service of the Red Army. During the Great Patriotic War, he always tried to visit the front line, personally position the troops, and at the same time to see how the ordinary Red Army soldiers served. So once visiting the front line of the defence, Semyon Budyonny came under enemy fire. Fortunately, he himself was not injured, but one of his luxurious moustache was badly burned, giving the commander an unattractive look. When Joseph Stalin learnt that Budyonny was going to shave off his moustache, he called the Marshal and said: Semyon, do not touch the moustache, they are now not yours, but the people's.
