What did self-shooters do at the front?
Each self-shooter had his own fate. Some gave in to nerves, and some succumbed to a moment of weakness. The history of the Great Patriotic War knows a lot of examples when even combat officers went to self-mutilation. Although for the sake of justice it should be said that the majority of ordinary Red Army soldiers still went to deliberately cause harm to health. Here is what one of the veterans recalled about it: “A young man, about twenty-five years old, was very afraid of the tribunal. Apparently, he was cunning in life. Until 1944 he managed to stay in the rear, had two children. But he shot himself in the arm. He picked up a trophy pistol, stuffed a kettle with rags and shot during a bombing raid in his right hand. I wanted to penetrate through the flesh, but the bullet got stuck in the bone. The doctors took the bullet out. But a question arose at once: What did the Germans shoot from above with pistols or automatic rifles? The bullet was a 9 millimeter Parabellum. So he was court-martialed.
