Why did the Red Army respect American trucks?
To say that the Red Army during World War II was enamored with American trucks is to say nothing. Despite the fact that Soviet trucks were famous for their repairability, they still lost to American models. Studebakers were especially respected, but Chevrolets were not inferior to them. Here is what the front driver Vasily Ustimenko recalled about it: “I was replaced by an American Chevrolet truck. No offense to our equipment, I will say: the car was good. Strong engine, spacious warm cabin, metal body. It took three tons of cargo. I got “Chevrolet” only with a rear driving axle, and there were rovers with both driving axles. But there was a self-pulling winch. If you get stuck in the mud, you wind off as much cable as necessary, hammer a metal crutch and pull yourself out. It was possible to hook the rope to a tree. All in all, a handy thing.
