What did the Germans carry with them from Soviet captivity?
In the West, it is not uncommon to encounter the opinion that German prisoners of war lived in inhumane conditions in Soviet captivity. They were poorly fed and used for the hardest labor. It is clear that the Soviet captivity was far from sugar, but they were paid quite good money by Soviet standards. Some of them even managed to accumulate a small capital, with which they were able to buy things that were highly valued in Germany at that time before being sent home. Here is what former prisoner of war Alfred Genat recalled about it. “On December 16, 1949, we were sleeping in a large barracks, suddenly a whistle blew and a command to pack up. They said we were going home. The list was read out, my name was there too. I was not particularly happy because I was afraid that something else would change. With the rest of my money I bought two large wooden suitcases, 3,000 cigarettes, vodka, black tea, and many other things at the carpenter's shop.
