The Guitar Solo Session series features interpretations of some of my favorite guitar solos. In many cases, I try to stay true to the original solo, while also incorporating some different licks, nuances and inflections. My overall goal is to be in the musical ballpark.

About the song and the solo:

"Love Walks In" was the third single released from Van Halen's 1986 album 5150, the group's first LP with then-new lead singer Sammy Hagar. With music composed by Eddie Van Halen and lyrics by Hagar, the synth-laden ballad soared to No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Additinoal hits such as "Why Can't This Be Love," "Dreams" and "Best Of Both Worlds" helped 5150 make it to No. 1, marking Van Halen's first chart-topping album.

Eddie Van Halen turns in a restrained, tasteful solo, showcasing his penchant for melody. Coming out the key center of C Major in the chorus, the solo modulates to the key of F Major, with the chords formulating a strong progression of I-iii-vi-IV-V. Following the solo, the song returns to the C Major key center, implying the same aforementioned progression. For the melodies in this section, Eddie utilizes the tap harmonic technique.

For my lead guitar track, I played my 1990 Purple Neon Ibanez RG570 through a 5150-era-inspired custom patch on my Eleven Rack. The backing track was created by splicing together parts of the original song and a track downloaded via GuitarBackingTrack.com.
