The Guitar Solo Session series features interpretations of some of my favorite guitar solos. In many cases, I try to stay true to the original solo, while also incorporating some different licks, nuances and inflections. My overall goal is to be in the musical ballpark.

About the song and the solo:

"In My Dreams" is featured on Dokken's 1985 studio album Under Lock And Key. Written by band members Don Dokken, George Lynch, Jeff Pilson, and "Wild" Mick Brown, the song reached No. 24 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart. Under Lock And Key cracked the Top 40, reaching No. 32 on the Billboard 200 and selling in excess of 1 million copies.

In recognition of his burning six-string work on "In My Dreams," Lynch received an award for the Ignoble Prize For Guitar Solo Of The Year from Guitar For The Practicing Musician, topping such heavyweight guitarists as Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen.

"When I go in and do my solos and think in terms of guitar, that's important to me, but I don't think that's important to the overall picture. Maybe it is to a few people, the minority," Lynch told GFTPM. "As a guitar player, I want to hear the great guitar players in the context of a song that I can appreciate, too. It can be great guitar playing whether it's Yngwie or Steve Lukather. The great song doesn't have to be a pop song, it can be a great metal song. What I'm trying to say is, I think you have to look at the big picture. I'm just making my contribution."

Based predominantly in the E Aeolian mode, Lynch's solo showcases his trademark style. Techniques include tapped harmonics, alternate picking, legato, oblique bends, and pinch harmonics. Lynch's wide interval stretches, unpredictable note flurries and controlled vibrato add more flair.

For my guitar tracks (dirty rhythm, clean rhythm and lead), I played my 1990 Laser Blue Ibanez RG770 through various custom patches on my Eleven Rack. The backing track was downloaded via GuitarBackingTrack.com.
