The Guitar Solo Session series features interpretations of some of my favorite guitar solos. In many cases, I try to stay true to the original solo, while also incorporating some different licks, nuances and inflections. My overall goal is to be in the musical ballpark.

About the song and the solo:

"Love Kills" was the second single from Vinnie Vincent Invasion's All Systems Go album. Released in 1988, the song was also featured in the film A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. It was written by band leader Vinnie Vincent, who played with KISS from 1982-1984.

While Vincent is known primarily for his guitar pyrotechnics, on "Love Kills" he turns in a masterfully melodic lead. HIs lines are simple and singable, perfectly outlining the chord changes, which are based in the key of F major. And his use of a harmonizer helps him achieve a lush, orchestral-like sound.

For my lead guitar track, I played my Jackson Gold RR24 guitar through a Soldano-inspired custom patch on my Eleven Rack. To mimic the harmonizer effect on the original recording, I used my Eventide PitchFactor, set to the Diatonic function, which allowed me to stack as many as three harmonized guitars. The backing track is an actual rough demo of "Love Kills" by the Invasion.
