Isabela, Netflix just had a spectacular quarter… and it’s celebrating by, HIKING ITS PRICES! In the U.S., the cost of the basic service with ads is going up a buck to eight dollars a month, while the premium package will be rising to twenty-five dollars. They added eighteen-point-nine million viewers in the quarter, and among the subscription streaming services, it had the lowest cancellation rate! Chalk it up to Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson, Christmas Day NFL, and the second season of Squid Game!
In other news, the Trump administration’s deregulating of cryptocurrency has begun. The Securities and Exchange Commission just announced that its acting chair is launching a “crypto task force” aimed at “developing a comprehensive and clear regulatory framework for crypto assets.” And while some lip service was paid to “protecting investors” and “fostering market integrity”, the message was clearly received; on the heels of the announcement, the value of a Bitcoin surged by over two percent!
And the Walt Disney Company’s absolute box office DOMINATION continues! This past holiday weekend, Moana 2 topped A BILLION DOLLARS at the combined domestic and international box offices,. That makes it Disney’s THIRD release from 2024 to cross that threshold. The other two were Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Marvel Studios’ Deadpool and Wolverine – and to be clear, those were the years ONLY THREE movies to reach a billion in box office!
I don’t want to think like an exec… but I can’t help but notice those three movies were all sequels. In other words, there’s probably even MORE money to squeeze out of ‘em! We shall see! I’ll be back in a flash with more headlines!
