In this accessible guide, you'll learn how to put a vIOS-L2 image (vmdk) into the GNS3 network simulator on a Windows 11 / 10 computer.
The steps include a few essential things. First, get the vIOS-L2 image from the right place. After downloading, add it to GNS3 and set it up to work with your network plan. You should know a bit about GNS3 and networks, but don't worry - the guide explains each step and gives valuable tips.
When you finish, you'll have a working vIOS-L2 image on your GNS3 ready for you to try out and test different network setups.
Step 1: First, download the vIOS-L2 IOS from the link below.

Step 2: Open the simulator program and click Edit / Preferences after creating a new project.
Step 3: In the general settings window that opens, click on Qemu VMs and then on the New button.
Step 4: In the QEMU VM Name window, type the name you want and click Next.
Step 5: In the QEMU Binary and Memory window, make a selection according to the bit version of your operating system. In the binary options section, set a value in the RAM part, depending on the performance of your computer hardware, and then click Next.
Step 6: In the Console Type window, continue with the telnet option.
Step 7: In the Disk Image window, click the Browse button and select the vIOS-L2.vmdk file you downloaded to your computer in the window that opens, and click the Open button. At this stage, a warning window will pop up, and click the Yes button.
Step 8: After adding the IOS image, click the Finish button. Later, click the Edit button in the Templates window and configure the category of the device as Switches.
Step 9: In the Network tab, in the Name Format section, change the name of the ethernet interfaces of the L2 device to GigabitEthernet.
Step 10: Also, in this tab, you can configure how many adapters you will add to the device in the Adapters section.
Step 11: If you have specified a 256MB RAM value in the installation, you can change this value from the RAM option in the Edit / General Settings tab.
Step 12: Now that your L2 device is ready, drag and drop it from Devices to the work area and run it.
