Having a tracheostomy tube or endotracheal tube affects the normal function of the upper airway due to impairing the cough reflex, increasing mucus production and impairing the actions of the cilia. Suctioning the tracheostomy tube or endotracheal tube may need to be utilized. Suctioning should not be painful, and if it is, please ask the medical staff to perform shallow suctioning. #lifewithavent #suction #trach
