Ladies and gentlemen, start your filing! The IRS officially kicked off tax season on Monday, and about 140 million people are expected to file returns before the April 15 deadline. According to IRS data, around two-thirds of taxpayers got a refund last year, at an average of over three thousand dollars! And since most refunds are issued in under three weeks, those who file now could get theirs by mid-February!
In other news, tech giant Microsoft is reportedly in talks to purchase Tik Tok. This according to President Donald Trump on Monday. They're just one of a number of companies and individuals that are reportedly interested in buying the popular social media platform. That list also includes Elon Musk, Oracle founder Larry Ellison, and philanthropist Frank McCourt. And if you're wondering if they all have something in common, the answer is yes, they're all billionaires many times over. Trump gave Tik Tok a 75 day reprieve the day he was sworn in and has said he'll likely make a decision on the ownership issue in the next 30 days.
And hopefully, this isn’t the start of something terrible, but the U.S. has just confirmed its first case of H5N9 bird flu in poultry. The outbreak happened on a duck farm in California, where the more common H5N1 strain was also found. The nearly hundred and twenty thousand birds on the farm were destroyed in early December. There is some concern among scientists that the more rare H5N9 could also cause human infections and become a pandemic.
