This is the simplest way that I’ve found to teach hip targeting - the horses pick it up so fast and smoothly, so I think it’s my favourite (though there are benefits to other approaches as well).
Hip targeting is really useful for:
Building body awareness of the hind legs. It’s a great exercise to connect the brain to the back feet!
Teaching lateral work from the ground such as haunches-in and half-pass.
Asking your horse to move their hindquarters over when standing tied, in a horse box or to line up at the mounting block.
Giving your horse another way to ask you to scratch their hamstrings (Freckles) or tail (India) 😉
One thing to note here is that I ALWAYS teach my horses to move their quarters AWAY first. I want that to be clear and the default just in case they’re handled by anyone else who might misinterpret this behaviour, or if there is any confusion, I prefer them to step away rather than towards me. Hip targeting is a little more advanced and you really want to know your horse is a calm, competent learner before you teach this one. If you wanna know more, I actually have a youtube video where I show 5 different ways to train hip targeting (including this one in more detail).
