The Caribbean coastline is under siege by huge masses of SEAWEED!
And I do mean masses! A record-setting twenty-four million TONS of sargassum carpeted the Atlantic Ocean in June!
Vast amounts of the stuff have made it to the Caribbean Sea, hitting coastlines from Puerto Rico to Barbados. And that's BAD news!
The brown macroalgae has a major negative impact on the environment, as it alters water temperature and pH balance.
That damages vital coral reef, seagrass, and sponge populations.
On top of that, the rotting sargassum gives off hydrogen sulfide, a gas that stinks like rotten eggs and is a health risk for people with breathing issues.
And all that doesn't even factor in economic costs like the devastating losses in tourism!
