3M has agreed to settle lawsuits stemming from its contamination of water systems for at least TEN-POINT-THREE BILLION dollars! And that amount could reportedly get as high as twelve-and-a-half billion! It’ll depend on how many water systems are found to contain their “forever chemicals” during the EPA-mandated testing. The settlement will be paid out over thirteen years, and much of it will go towards clean-up… which is good, because these “forever chemicals” have been linked to a multitude of health problems, including liver disease and cancer.
Good news for renters: America’s year-over-year median rent was down in May, the first time there’s been a decline in at least three years! That’s how long Realtor-dot-com has been tracking this, and according to their figures, the national median asking rent in May was one thousand, seven hundred and thirty-nine dollars. And while that’s actually a three-dollar increase from April, it’s a point-five percent drop from May of last year. Mind you, rents are up nearly TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT relative to 2019 but let’s take the win!
And here’s another trend: America is getting older! Estimates from the Census Bureau put America’s median age in 2022 at thirty-eight-point-nine-years-old! That’s an increase of roughly three-and-a-half years over the last two decades… and with birth rates in decline for years, that median age is expected to keep rising. At this point, about a third of the states have populations where half are older than forty.
