Today's training session takes you through four progressive soccer drills aimed at enhancing your first touch, passing accuracy and off the ball movement.
EXERCISE 1: Our first exercise is a simple two-person close range passing drill. Its primary purpose is to get your body warmed up, but also to get your mind primed and focused on the finer details needed for the upcoming drills. While performing this, focus on constantly checking your shoulders once a pass is released. It’s important to get comfortable takinging your eyes off the ball and scanning your surroundings as often as possible. This simple action is fundamental at the higher level and is something we’ll be focusing on with every drill today.
EXERCISE 2: Moving on to our second exercise, we'll be concentrating on breaking lines with your first touch and switching play with firm passes on the ground. Here, you’ll receive a ball from one side and deliver a firm pass to a target in the opposite direction. Keep these essential details in mind when practicing this drill. First it’s important to get into the habit of checking away from a defender and giving yourself space when receiving the ball, don't forget to always check over your shoulders as you're doing this. Always Receive the ball with your back foot and try to break lines with your first touch, taking the ball in the direction you want to go. When playing into the target, always pass with the opposite foot as to the one you received with, and make sure the pass is firm and accurate. And finally, focus on maintaining fluid and relaxed movements throughout the drill.
EXERCISE 3: Our third drill centers around checking into spaces and receiving the ball with an optimal side on body position. Here’s how it goes. Now there are a few things you want to really focus on with this exercise. First, when opening up to the sides, always receive the ball with your body in a side on position. This is the most efficient way to quickly break lines and help you move the ball forward. Next you want to look to change your speeds within the flow of this exercise. Go from a slow and steady state, to an explosive movement into spaces when receiving the ball.
EXERCISE 4: Is a dynamic game related combination adding the element of turning with the ball when you back is to goal. Now when practicing this drill, we need to focus on the added element of turning with the ball. The first touch needs to be close enough to your body but taken in a forward manner with the idea of breaking lines towards the goal. And as the case with the previous drills, we need to constantly scan our shoulders, opening up in a side-on position to receive with our back foot and focus on firm accurate passes into our targets.
