Parenting Tips for How to Talk About Breast Development & Puberty Changes from me, Kathleen Hema, a sex educator, public health lecturer, & mom of 2 young kids. In these 4 Parenting Tips, I explain how to talk about the puberty change of breast development and why it's important to start this talk with your child in the intermediate age (ages 7, 8, 9). Discussing that breasts are not perfectly symmetrical, stretch marks are common, breast and nipple soreness is very common and can be one of the first signs that puberty hormones have kicked in and puberty is beginning. Parents, it's also important to explain that bra wearing is optional and that there is no proven medical benefit to bra wearing as well as how to help your child choose a bra that fits and is comfortable. As parents, you may think that your child will embrace breast development, but for some non-binary children breast development may be unwanted. And lastly, this conversation isn't a one-time talk and only for girls. If you have son or a child that identifies as a boy, it is important to also let them know about breast development and why snapping a bra or touching someone's bra without their consent is unacceptable behavior.
Having the Sex Talk with your Child can feel overwhelming. But I'm here to help and It's Time for the Sex Talk for Parents is designed to make having conversations with your child about sex and answer their sex questions easier. Puberty begins at different times for all children. Therefore, beginning to talk about puberty changes with your 7 year old can be very beneficial is letting them know What to Expect, Why it Will Occur, What it May Feel Like, & How to Support Them throughout puberty and into young adulthood. Giving your child a heads up on puberty changes and being open about the information allows your child to feel accepted, prepared, and know that they can come to you with any questions that they may have.
'It's Time for the Sex Talk for Parents' is a channel designed to provide parenting tips and parenting advice on how to talk about sex, sexual health, and sexuality with their child. Many parents feel unprepared to have talks about sex with their child and I, Kathleen Hema, am here to help parents build their confidence in being able to talk about sex with their child. Parents may feel shocked that their child is entering puberty so early or unsure about how to talk about sexuality, including the 5 circles of sexuality. I want parents to know that they can provide medically-accurate and age-appropriate sex education to their child AND include their family values. Family values are an integral part to the sex talk and sex talks with your child but it is key to first explain the medically-accurate sex and sexual health information in an age-appropriate way. Then you can add in your family values.
In my videos, I give examples of how to do this. Check out these playlists - dependent on the age of your child.
