Millions of people in Central Mexico spent the weekend preparing for a possible evacuation due to volcanic activity! Popocatapetl is located roughly fifty miles southeast of Mexico City, meaning there are about twenty-five million people living within a sixty-mile radius! In addition to the spewing ash causing schools, parks, and airports to be closed, the alert level was raised to Phase 3, which is just shy of an evacuation order! Here’s hoping that’s as far as this story goes!
The NAACP has teamed up with two other civil rights organizations to issue a travel advisory for the state of Florida! Acting alongside the League of United Latin American Citizens and Equality Florida, a gay rights advocacy group, the NAACP’s travel advisory is in reaction to the many “hostile” policies implemented by Florida governor Ron DeSantis. Including his Don’t Say Gay Bill and the Stop WOKE Act that bans race-based conversations in schools. Given that tourism is one of Florida’s biggest industries, we’ll have to see how this plays out!
And a psychiatric hospital in Detroit is FIGURATIVELY under fire after holding an active-shooter drill WITHOUT WARNING ANYONE! Hawthorn Center's director instructed a low-level employee, Brandon Woodruff, to take an imitation rifle and walk around to see how staff, patients and their families would react. Well, many called 911, and because police ALSO hadn't been warned, TWENTY-TWO heavily-armed officers arrived! They were EVENTUALLY told about the drill, but Woodruff was handcuffed at gunpoint while they investigated. He’s now SUING the hospital over the trauma, as are many families and staff!
