Bathing a newborn those first few times can be a tricky business. Lean on our friendly Peterborough midwives for helpful, step by step advice for a no-scream bathtime.

The trick? Being organised. Babies are slippery when wet so make sure you have everything close to hand before you begin. It goes without saying but please never leave a baby unattended in the bath -- even for a split second.

Happy splashing friends!

How to Bathe Your Baby
==================

Handling a wriggly, slippery bath time baby takes practice and confidence but you'll soon be splashing around loving it! It's up to you how often you bath your baby, but in the early days once a week is fine with regular topping and tailing.

Some babies love being in water, some really aren't happy about it -- your baby will let you know! You may find it useful to have somebody with you the first few times you bath your baby.

OK, first of all, let's gather our equipment. You'll need:

a baby bath or washing up bowl
a couple of towels
flannel or sponge
several pieces of cotton wool
clean warm dry clothes
nappy
a muslin square or old towel (just in case your baby boy wees over you when the cold air touches his bits)
a warm blanket

Keep the warm room and fill the bath up about 5-6inches so that most of baby's body will be submerged whilst being held firmly by you. The temperature should be around 37 degrees.

First wash baby's face using the cotton wool and warm water from the bath. You don't need to use any soap or baby bath. After wetting the cotton wool, clean from the inside of the eye outwards, discarding the cotton wool after one wipe. Use the same method around the ears but never poke into the ears. And never push the cotton wool up baby's nose either to remove dried mucous; it will come away when ready.

Remove baby's clothes and nappy. If there is any poo, give the bottom area a quick wipe and clean before putting baby into the bath. Do be mindful of your back

Using one hand keep baby's neck resting neck on your arm, whilst holding onto the arm and legs with your other hand. Gently slide baby in let them float guided, back and forwards around the bath.

Using your hand, a flannel or sponge, gently clean your entire baby's body. The genital area needs no special attention for either boys or girls. When baby has had enough, lift out of the bath onto a dry towel, wrap up and gently pat dry. If baby has very dry skin try a gentle massage with olive oil.

Now dress your baby in fresh clean clothes and wrap in a blanket. Pop baby in Moses basket or pram while you pack the other equipment away.

When you feel ready it's lovely to have a relaxing bath with your baby and enjoy that skin to skin contact. Just remember that baby's skin is very delicate so don't add baby bath or oils to the water.
