How to Top and Tail Your baby
=======================
Topping & Tailing is a daily baby care routine to keep your little one clean and comfy. The 'top' is your baby's face, neck and hands. This can be done twice daily in the same way as we wash our hands and face and the 'tail' is your baby's nappy area, including the cord in the early days.
Organisation is paramount so gather together everything you need before you begin.
You will need a changing mat, clean clothes, cotton wool, bowl of warm water, nappies (more than one, just in case baby fills it again immediately), Nappy sac for rubbish and nappy cream if required.
Please avoid petroleum jelly. At is it not necessary. If your baby has a sore bottom a little branded nappy cream is helpful.
Regardless of what type of birth you had, this is easier if it's done at working height either on a changing mat, work surface or wherever's easiest. Always use a changing mat to keep baby comfy.
Leave your baby safely in the Moses basket, chair or a cot whilst you wash your hands before you start.
Always keep your baby covered. Babies can quickly lose warmth, particularly in the early days.
To clean baby's eyes wet cotton wool and wipe from the nose towards the ear once only.
Repeat again with fresh cotton wool if matter is still present. Copy on the opposite side. Dry in the same way with a dry cotton wool ball.
Next, using a larger amount of cotton wool wipe around the baby's face and pay attention to behind the ears and the creases in the neck. Likewise, dry with cotton wool.
You can finish off by wrapping baby in a blanket for a lovely cuddle
Tailing is just another word for changing baby's nappy and is particularly useful in the early days for keeping baby's cord stump nice and dry.
OK first of all remove just your baby's legs from the babygro so baby's top half keeps warm. Remove the nappy. Using cotton wool and warm water wipe the area from front to back on both boys and girls, ensuring all creases are clean. With baby boys, don't try to retract the foreskin. With baby girls, there's no need to clean inside the vulval area.
Use fresh cotton wall balls to prevent cross infection and ensure all creases are cleaned. Dry well with cotton wool. Pop on a nappy and do up the babygro.
