Mumbai Dabbawallas - Why this 130-year-old system is on ventilator support today

White kurta and pyjama, and a white cap. And, of course, the 'dabbas' in hand or laden on a cycle. The legendary dabbawalas have been delivering home-cooked food to Mumbaikars for 130 years.

This 5,000-strong cooperative is recognised as one of world’s most efficient logistics systems, reportedly making fewer than 3.4 mistakes per million transactions

Work is worship for these dabbawalas, most of who are from Vakari community, and time, money. But these 5,000-odd men who worked through floods and terror attacks in Mumbai, have been jolted by COVID-19

The pandemic-induced lockdowns have spelt doom for the much-respected men in white. With offices and businesses shut, and others working from home, they have been rendered jobless and penniless. The dabbawalas are desperately in need of help.
