What is ISOFIX?
============
Essentially it's a standardised international car seat fitting system. First developed in 1997 and made standard in all new cars since 2006, ISOFIX makes installing car seats simple, easy and quick.
How is it different?
It's different because it removes the need to use seat belts. ISOFIX car seats and car seat bases instead latch on to specially designed anchor points -- metal clips like these (presenter points to car seat to show or cutaway visual) in the base of the seat of the car.
ISOFIX car seats also come with an anti-tipping and anti-rotational device to provide better stability. This can be either:
• a Top Tether -- that's a secure belt that attaches to your car's Top Tether anchor point, either on the boot floor, seat back or (cutaway visual) -- these are known as semi-universal ISOFIX car seats
• a support leg or 'footprop' that rests on the floor of the car Cutaway visual -- these are known as universal ISOFIX car seat NB will need more than one car seat to show variants!
So it's safer?
Absolutely. It's estimated that 70% of car seats secured with seat belts are installed incorrectly, but by attaching directly to the chassis of the vehicle, ISOFIX provides a more direct and rigid connection.
Not only that it also reduces the risk of incorrect installation making it the safest way to secure your child in the car.
Any other features to look out for?
Some ISOFIX car seats and bases feature colour coding indicators to confirm safe installation. It's also worth noting that the new EU regulation i-Size stipulates ISOFIX only seats.
