Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 (Can a Cheap Ultra-wide Lens Deliver Results?) | Round Glass Review
The Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 STM ASPH ED IF ultrawide-angle lens has a definite use and is a good value for the photographer on the budget. Given the price this fetches, even new, it does deliver images well above expectations when used within the window it needs for that. I tried to keep this lens between f/5 and f/11 and found that for almost all subjects that range worked the best in terms of balancing overall sharpness and scene illumination. For night photography, f/4 was a good option, too.
The issue with this lens, for me, was honestly never the image quality. It was always the price. I bought this lens for $156, a bit less than it sells for new as of this video’s recording. And, let’s be completely honest, that’s a good price for a lens that delivers images like this one can and that has a silent internal-focusing stepper motor. And what’s never sat well with me was that if this were a lens released by an OEM, it would likely be in the $500 range. And so when I look at this lens, just like when I look at the KamLan and TTArtisan lenses I’ve reviewed in the last year, I wonder who made them, in what conditions, and under what pressures. That applies to the parts, the assembly, and the packaging. The cost of third-party lenses from China eats at me a lot, and though I believe it’s important to be fair to each product, I honestly cannot recommend investing in this class of photographic equipment because there is a reason that lenses from China sell for cheap, and it’s a reason none of us, in the West especially, should be at peace with.
