Canon FD New 50mm f/3.5 Macro (Close-up Video Secret Weapon?) | Round Glass Review
The Canon FD 50mm f/3.5 Macro is a versatile standard macro lens with some limitations. If you’re a fan of this channel, you’ve seen this lens in use a lot. I use it to digitize 8X10 negatives and I have also used it to record almost all, if not all, of the camera manuals I’ve released in the last three years. This lens, for me, works the best for video work because it is a hair softer than comparable-spec lenses and that works a bit better in the motion space than in the still space for me. Also, the on-adapter aperture control makes this lens very easy to use for motion work when changing focus (and using a larger aperture to ensure proper focus) without having to adjust the aperture ring. This also ensures that I can switch between aperture settings without changing the aperture or exposure settings on the camera. Honestly, this lens really shines in video.
For still shooters, this is an okay mirrorless option, though better exist. For FD film users, this lens does hold up nicely on film, which is where I would recommend it be used for still imagery. In all, though, this is a good and reliable lens that can perform well though it is not the best lens for all situations.
