The Sickness of Faking Sickness: Munchausen and Malingering
In the 18th century, Baron Munchausen, shown here riding a cannonball, once leapt over a nine-foot tall hedge with a horse balanced upon his head and another tucked under his arm. Today, Baron Munchausen lends his name to Munchausen Syndrome, which is one type of Factitious Disorder, where people exaggerate, feign, or produce illnesses. And yet, despite these falsehoods, the problems caused are very real, like the time a boy forced an airplane to land by faking an asthma attack. When taken to such extremes, faking sicknesses can become a sickness. But where exactly is the line? Allow me to explain!
