Cameras have three basic metering modes -- averaging (whole scene), center-weighted (biased to the center of the scene), and spot (entirely based on a small spot.) At their core, Canon's evaluative metering, Nikon's matrix and 3-D matrix, and Sony's Multi metering modes are just advanced versions of averaging meters. The three basic types of meter settings function differently because they meter off different percentages of or parts of the scene and in slightly different ways. Each metering mode has different uses that it's ideal for and settings when it can work the best or worst.

This video demonstrates how different meter settings affect a scene and demonstrates how meter settings and lighting affect how a scene looks. This video also explains why spot metering is the most powerful metering mode and when averaging and center-weighted metering modes make a lot of sense to use.
